Compounding pharmacy

Definition

A licensed pharmacy that prepares customised medications for individual patients, including formulations and dose forms not available commercially.

Compounding pharmacies fall into two regulatory categories. 503A pharmacies compound for individually identified patients against a specific prescription. 503B outsourcing facilities register with the FDA and may compound in larger batches.

In direct-to-consumer telehealth, compounding is what makes combination formulations, alternative dose forms and personalised strengths possible.

Not every compound can be prepared, and availability changes with regulatory conditions and supply. A network that routes across many pharmacies absorbs that variability far better than a single relationship.

Why it matters

Fulfillment is the step that stalls most telehealth launches. Contracting and integrating a pharmacy takes weeks, and one pharmacy's state map and outages become your own.
